Hey, guys. A bunch of you lot talk about how you got accepted with unpublished works or with very few published.

My question is: what exactly does 'unpublished works' include? Specific examples would be awesome!
I'm crazy nervous for applying in 2010 because my school doesn't offer any opportunities to get anything published. Actually, while we're on the subject, would you guys please recommend ways to get stuff published outside of school?

How about this: start writing your livejournal like you're a reporter for a wire service - tripple-source every entry with quotes and full names for all three sources. Do that over and over again until you have lots of such clips, then print them out and include them in yr portfolio, along with a link to yr LJ.

Also - don't mention my name ;)

If you go out and cover a story as though you were getting published, that will do. Or if you just write a gonzo style blog posting about a certain event. Etc!

The advice from both of the people who posted above me is spot on.

Try volunteering at a small community newspaper. Ask if you can shadow one of the reporters.

You can't expect to get paid with no experience, so suck it up.
